IC INFORMATION

Name: Dr. Leonard Horatio McCoy
Canon: Star Trek (Alternate Original Series)
Age: 36
Gender: Male; he/him/his
Species: Human
Appearance: McCoy is a white human male, standing at 6'2" with broad shoulders and an athletic frame. Lightly tanned despite his time in space, he has a heart-shaped face with hazel eyes, and short, dark brown hair he makes a token effort at taming. A highly expressive kinda guy, he's gathered a small collection of lines on his forehead and at the corners of his eyes. Outside of his Starfleet Science blues, McCoy prefers to wear natural fabrics in neutral colors, and has a fondness for wearing the odd bit of jewelry.

Canon point: Early ST: Beyond, arrival at Starbase Yorktown.

History: Here

Personality answers:

Your character must live with only one sense for a year. They are allowed to choose. What do they pick? Why? How do they cope?

McCoy would reject the question, stubborn as he is, and then begrudgingly choose his sight. Without his sight, he couldn't perform his duties as a doctor and a surgeon (and he couldn't see his daughter!!), which would be an enormous blow to him. It would mean a loss of identity, of purpose, and the end of his ability to treat and heal others, all of it such integral parts of his life. He wouldn't be happy losing his other senses for it, but he'd throw himself into occupational therapy, assistive tools and partnerships, and seek out disability resources to utilize in order to fill whatever handicaps he faced– the very same treatments he'd refer to anyone in his care, tbf.

McCoy's pride is never so great that he's unwilling to ask for assistance, or even to let it get dinged in order to succeed.

What would your character say is their best trait? What is truly their best trait?

He'd say something cheeky like his winning personality, and then cop to his stubbornness, knowing how once he's got his mind set on something, little else can move him. McCoy damn well survived all the shit that's been thrown at them over the years, hasn't he? Always made it through, no matter what.

Really though, his best trait is his compassion for others. The RBF isn't real, after all, it's just armor he wears to protect his bigass heart. McCoy is the guy who couldn't leave Jim behind (twice!), who schlepped Spock across an alien landscape, and urged Carol Marcus to leave him to die when his arm was trapped inside an armed photon torpedo. He cares for his patients no matter who they are, friend or foe, provides an ear for those who need it, and he'll go to the ends of any planet to save the crew. They're his people, dammit.

What would it take to truly upset your character, enough that they would act upon their feelings? Are they the sort to forgive?

Cruelty makes him furious, but cold dismissal when something's obviously gone pear-shaped will set him right off. Listen to him, damn it!

He has no qualms about snapping back at someone he's upset with, or nursing a grudge. Talking shit about his ex? Yep. Taking Spock to task in the first film for tossing Jim off the ship? Sure thing. Grabbing Jim and calling him out on his "I'm fine" bs in the second film? Talking back to Khan?? Absolutely, 100%. He really wears his heart on his sleeve, often to his own detriment.

Despite this, McCoy is still a forgiving soul in spite of his fiery complaints, close to Jim and Spock both– his relationship with the latter in Beyond quite a far cry from their barbed exchanges in the first film.

What would be your character's lowest, darkest moment they've lived through? How did they respond to their troubles and face their demons?

His divorce ranks high (or low?) on this list. It was acrimonious, upsetting, and so life-altering he uprooted himself and fled his home, his profession, and the entire state of Georgia with just a bag and the clothes on his back. Ragged-looking, fearful of flying and quick to drink on the flight to Starfleet Academy, he confessed to Jim that he "no place else to go". Truly, it wouldn't have seemed that McCoy's trajectory would do anything other than plummet.

Except, it did just the opposite. He hit the ground running when it came to this fresh start: McCoy tossed the flask, excelled at the Academy, conquered his aviophobia, and made a best friend and confidant for life in Jim. Chosen for a position of Senior Medical Officer on the flagship herself was no small feat, much less for anyone coming straight out of the Academy, and McCoy would go on to prove himself worthy of the position of Chief Medical Officer in the battle against Nero.

McCoy has had his low points in life, but he will always do his damnedest to claw his way back out of them.

Powers/Abilities: A 100% baseline human, Dr. McCoy is a brilliant medical doctor and officer of Starfleet. After his initial start in medicine on Earth, his move into Starfleet prepared him with the experience and knowledge to treat a wide variety of human and alien ailments that might occur on a starship that visits other worlds. McCoy leads the Enterprise's medical department as her Chief Medical Officer, a senior officers' position that requires solid leadership, diplomatic and people skills, and a great degree of coordination with others both inside and outside his department. Like many other CMOs across various Trek franchises, he's a physician of multiple specialties, fulfilling a role as Internist, trauma surgeon, and neurosurgeon.

McCoy is proficient in hand to hand combat, and is a decent shot with a phaser. While studying at the Academy, he also undertook survival training, and enough command track courses in tactics and navigation to qualify as a helmsman for Kirk's run at the Kobayashi Maru.

While McCoy is a capable pilot of shuttle crafts, he'd prefer to be anyone's last-of-the-last-choices for this, ever.

Goals:
I'm eager for McCoy to be placed outside of his comfort zone, away from the ship and her crew, and the support networks he has at home. Faced with the knowledge that he might never return and may very well need to build a life anew, while also struggling with the transformation's effects on his self image and physical health? I'm super stoked to explore that! Lastly, in spite of his curmudgeonly exterior, McCoy really does excel when he can look after others, even in small ways. So I'm looking forward to delving into how he can serve as a kind of support role for other Augmented Ones in the game, whether through doctoring, lending an ear, aiding others through their own transformations, and just building up strong relationships as the game progresses.
